Awesome for DVDs, extremely sharp and bright color, and that’s saying something: we live in a loft apartment where it is impossible to black out the entire space, and we have a lot of light pollution at night through the loft windows via the busy street outside. It is still possible to watch movies comfortably. one day i suspect people will start putting lawn chairs outside our window and watch with us.

The picture is crisp and bright. You can project in 720p widescreen, which I have done from my Xbox 360. The projector is only throwing the image about 10 feet, but my screen size is easily over 100″. Even at that size, the text is sharp and clear. The lights in the room where my projector is located are bright, so they can tend to wash out the picture a little bit, but honestly not too much.

Some of this merits explaining. Sports gamma is the brightest of the three available gamma curves. Unlike the same mode on other projectors, it has very little green push. It’s also good about adding definition to the blacks without messing with the black point. I compensated for the green with a slight tint adjustment.

There is a distinct clicking sound coming from the projector in about 1 minute durations whenever my forced air furnace kicks on. Naturally, heat rises to the ceiling where the projector is mounted about 4 inches down from. The extra heat causes the fans to kick on high and makes a discernible “clicking” sound. It is annoying in anything but very loud scenes.

I am completely blown away at how sharp and bright this vivitek is. I am throwing up an 82 inch screen onto a flat ultra white base paint and this looks sharper than my 42″ LCD. The colors are vivid and the blacks are nice and dark. No issues and this is only in standard mode. The machine is whisper quiet also.

The Epson PowerLite 8350 has a great image quality with cinema size. The smaller the projected image, the higher the quality of the picture, however this difference is only slight and we use the largest size possible for everything we watch. several inputs are available and I have used them all including 2 HDMI, S-Video, Computer, and component connections.
